Sonus Networks Establishes Japanese Subsidiary

Sonus Furthers Reach in Asia Pacific Region with New Tokyo Operations

WESTFORD, Mass., August 27, 2001 – Sonus Networks (Nasdaq: SONS), a leading provider of voice infrastructure solutions for the new public network, today announced that it has formed a Japanese subsidiary, Nihon Sonus Networks K.K., based in Tokyo. The company also announced that it has named Takayuki Oshima to head up its Japanese operations.

Sonus' direct operations in Tokyo, which include sales, marketing and support functions, will complement the company's existing alliances with leading Japanese distribution and development partners. Sonus has forged relationships with Nissho Electronics Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation, under which they sell and support the full range of Sonus packet voice solutions to the Japanese carrier market. A year ago, Sonus formed a partnership with Nissho Electronics Corporation and NTT COMWARE Corporation to jointly develop a localized version of the Sonus product family, including the GSX9000 Open Services Switch, the PSX6000 SoftSwitch and the SGX2000 SS7 Signaling Gateway, incorporating key features and functionality for the Japanese market.

"By increasing our presence in Japan, we will be better able to support our current customers in the region, including Fusion Communications and Global Crossing, as they deploy next-generation voice networks," said Gary Rogers, vice president, worldwide sales, Sonus Networks. "The additional resources we're putting into place enhance our position as we pursue opportunities with both established and new next-generation carriers in Japan."

Sonus has already achieved considerable success in Japan through its groundbreaking work with Fusion Communications, considered the country's first next-generation carrier. In April, Fusion launched a nationwide, Sonus-based packet voice network with switches deployed initially in 17 cities in Japan. Today, Fusion's highly sophisticated all-IP network infrastructure delivers flat rate long distance service to more than 550,000 subscribers, and the carrier plans to grow its subscriber base to 1 million customers by the end of fiscal year 2001 (March 2002).

To lead Sonus' efforts in Japan, the company has appointed Takayuki Oshima president of Nihon Sonus Networks K.K. In this role, Oshima will support Sonus' existing customers in their network deployments, develop relationships with other leading telecommunications providers, and manage Sonus' distribution and development partnerships. Oshima brings to Sonus significant experience in the Japanese telecommunications industry. Prior to joining Sonus, Oshima spent more than eight years in various sales and support roles for Lucent Technologies and AT&T, most recently as country manager for Japan for Lucent's Software Product Group. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the business unit's Japanese operations and successfully introduced new products, including mission-critical billing systems, into various Japanese telecommunications carriers.
