The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Ltd. Completes the First Phase of Next Generation Network Transformation With Sonus Networks

All International Voice Traffic Now Supported By An All-IP Sonus Core, Reducing Network Operating Costs

WESTFORD, Mass., July 14, 2009 – Sonus Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: SONS), providing network transformation through IP communications, today announced that The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited (BTC) has successfully completed the first phase of its IP network migration, using Sonus technology and professional services to bring a next-generation communications infrastructure to The Bahamas. This first phase of the full CLASS Four and CLASS Five migration project underway with Sonus routes all of BTC’s international traffic through an efficient and cost effective Sonus IP core.

During this first stage of network transformation, Sonus has successfully installed an IMS-ready, next-generation network core, which enables BTC to deploy IP peering and IP session management. BTC is using the Sonus Network Border Switch (NBS) for session security, Sonus GSX9000™ for media gateway services and the Sonus PSX™ for routing and policy services for both IP and legacy TDM traffic. Sonus’ hybrid approach offers session border security and media gateway services in the same chassis providing BTC with a cost effective method of migrating traffic from TDM to IP using the same infrastructures. The migration has allowed for all international traffic to be directed and managed across the new IP core. This reduces the cost and complexity of the deployment and network operating overheads.

A geo-redundant site location has been established in Miami, Florida to address the provisioning and switching for the entire network in the event of an emergency. The Miami site will also terminate traffic to United States-based carriers, which allows better access to cost competitive North American wholesalers.

"With this first phase of migration complete, we are now providing the Bahamian people with leading edge communications technology,” said I. Kirk Griffin, Acting President & CEO at BTC. “As always, it is our goal to provide the people and businesses on our islands with first-class communication capabilities. The project management and support from the professional services team at Sonus has been critical to us achieving our deployment goals, while training our engineers to support and manage the new technology."

The following phases of BTC’s deployment will include migration of legacy CLASS 5 switches to Sonus’ next generation access platform, the Sonus ASX™ Feature Server. Residential and business subscribers will maintain the legacy services they have come to expect while BTC offers them a new suite of IP based services. The complete deployment, core-to-edge, will enable BTC to offer a robust set of services that weren’t practical using legacy technology.

"BTC has made a significant investment in the future of their communications infrastructure, demonstrating their commitment to make the Bahamian Islands a hub of excellence,” commented Guru Pai, senior vice president and general manager at Sonus Networks. “We are extremely pleased with the strength of our partnership on this project and look forward to completing the final phases of this migration to an IP-based infrastructure. This will give The Bahamas some of the most advanced network capabilities available today."

The fully integrated IP-based platform from Sonus Networks has significantly reduced the amount of equipment needed to manage increasing voice traffic across BTC’s network, when compared to their legacy systems. BTC estimates show that, by choosing Sonus technology, it will significantly reduce energy costs, maintenance costs and support costs.
