Voice over FTTx
Service providers are rapidly building high value triple and quadruple play networks using Fiber-to-the-"x" (FTTx) broadband access. GENBAND's Voice over FTTx solutions enable circuit-switched local exchanges to control voice services over FTTx.

GPON, IP DSLAM, and other FTTx broadband access networks are based in IP, but traditional voice services are typically delivered from TDM-based circuit switches. Service providers, fully engaged on developing their new video and data services over FTTx, are often challenged by the additional requirement to employ new, IP-based call control like softswitches and IMS cores simply to provide voice services.
GENBAND’s G6® Universal Gateway and G2™ Compact Gateway are market-leading platforms that allow service providers to deploy FTTx access while leveraging their local exchanges for voice services and call control. The G6 and G2 interwork local exchange circuit protocols including V5.2 and GR-303 with IP-based FTTx protocols like H.248, enabling standard phones on FTTx networks to communicate with local exchange switches.
Through the economics of aggregation, the G6 and G2 are more cost-effective options versus internal gateway cards in FTTx access equipment, requiring fewer local exchange interfaces (V5.2, GR-303, or TR-08). These gateways also allow the transport of high-value business services like E1, PRI, and T1 over FTTx networks.
- Enables rapid deployment of voice services over FTTx networks by allowing local exchange/Class 5 switching and features to be extended across new FTTx-based networks
- Reduces CapEx and OpEx by eliminating the costs associated with deploying softswitches or IMS cores
- Gateways' voice concentration capabilities provide greater cost efficiencies than using internal gateways in FTTx access equipment
- Provides extensive interworking for V5.2, GR-303, TR-08, CAS, and PRI circuit interfaces as well as H.248 and MGCP over packet interfaces
- Transports high value business services like E1, PRI, and T1 over IP via PseudoWire Emulation (PWE)
- Rich feature support and proven interoperability with all leading local exchange switches and FTTx access equipment including OLTs, IP DSLAMs, MSANs, ONTs, MTAs, and IADs
- Carrier grade gateways with billions of in-network minutes, world-class reliability and hitless upgrades
- Transitions easily to SIP and IMS networks, as gateways can be repurposed to provide trunking and Packet Line Gateway services for central office modernization
