FMC: Femtocell
As a leading provider of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) solutions, GENBAND's carrier class security and gateway products advance the growth of femtocell networks worldwide.
Femtocells enable high quality voice and multimedia services to be delivered to mobile devices in indoor or weak coverage areas. A small-sized femtocell access point located in a home or business is linked to a broadband Internet connection, creating a small coverage area that uses the same frequency as the macrocellular network. When in range of the femtocell, the handset communicates with the mobile core network via the Internet.
For operators and subscribers, femtocells provide many advantages:
- Reduces operator costs by using the subscriber's broadband network for backhaul to the mobile core
- Avoids expensive Radio Access Network (RAN) buildouts required with increased data usage, and recovers scarce macrocell bandwidth
- Expands the operator's ability to create new revenue from services like advanced gaming, mobile TV, and social networking
- Subscribers benefit from improved network performance and voice quality, flexible pricing options, and the ability to use a wide range of single mode handsets
An array of security risks and related network issues arise when using subscribers' broadband Internet access for femtocell backhaul. These include the risk of exposing the mobile core to security threats, possible compromises of user privacy, and the potential for other network attacks or exploitations.
GENBAND works with the world's leading femtocell integrators to enable a complete portfolio of FMC solutions that address these issues and risks, for smooth, rapid, and secure femtocell deployments.
The S2 and S9 Integrated Border Gateway™ (IBG) --
- Speed and simplify deployments by providing security, user authentication, mobile-IP connectivity management, secure tunnel management, accounting, and policy enforcement
- Control and manage the IPSec tunnels that securely transport voice and multimedia between the femtocell access point and the mobile core
- Monitor connections for IP intrusion and attacks, discard malformed and Denial of Service (DoS) packets, filter and firewall control protocols, and enforce Quality of Service (QoS)
- Comply with standards-based interfaces defined for 3GPP, UMA/GAN, and CDMA networks
- Reduce network complexity and costs by combining security gateway and session border control functionality in a single platform
The G9 Converged Gateway
- Reduces total cost of ownership by eliminating the need for separate gateways, converging the core distributed MSC gateway with mobile access / RAN gateway functions
- Enables femtocell IP traffic to traverse the IP network into the mobile core by providing media and signaling adaptation
- Provides voice quality improvements by supporting Transcoder Free Operation/TrFO and other Voice Quality Enhancements
- Utilizes standards-based Iu interfaces to the access network and mobile core
